Design Engineer - Tool Quoting

Position Summary

Tool Quoting Engineer compiles accurate cost estimates for tool design, manufacturing or procurement in a timely manner using customer print and specifications as primary input and maintains all tool cost estimate related tools.

Skills/Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or abilities required.

 

  • Associate degree in Tool Design, Mechanical Design or related field, or a Tool & Die Journeyman certification, and a minimum one year of relevant tool experience (design, building or quoting); or a minimum of three years of relevant tool quoting.
  • Computer proficiency required
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD software required, SolidWorks and Logopress preferred
  • Working knowledge of tool components, materials, manufacturing, heat treatment and coatings
  • Working knowledge of part materials and related properties required
  • Knowledge of post manufacturing processes for manufactured parts preferred (coating, heat treat, etc.)
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to prioritize multiple tasks
  • Knowledge of product costing and accounting principles
  • Knowledge of Micro Estimating or similar estimating software preferred
  • Ability to read blueprints, including GD&T

Key Responsibilities

This list of duties and responsibilities is not all-inclusive and may be expanded to include other duties and responsibilities, as management may deem necessary from time to time.

 

  • Use manufacturing knowledge, KMC process knowledge, print, specifications and part data (model) to develop accurate manufacturing steps and related tooling estimates
  • Manipulate customer supplied CAD data to estimate material consumption
  • Create tool concept (sequence of operation) and utilize CAD tools to create strip layouts
  • Determine quote level and priority in order to allocate appropriate time and resources
  • Interact with Sales, Engineering, Supply Chain, and Quality to define project scope and details
  • Address technical print issues with the customer directly and through Sales Engineering
  • Document on the quote all exceptions to the customer request
  • Address all customer specifications in the quote
  • Utilize metrics and contribute to the continuous improvement of the tool quoting process
  • Create, maintain and train tool estimating business tools used by the Quoting Engineering group
  • Other duties as assigned or required.
